South Africa's agriculture was being deregulated and the rural economy quickly shifted its emphasis and became more consumer-focused. The time was right, he felt, to add value to the raw milk they were producing and selling, and the subsequent success of the company proved him correct.

Today Melt and his brothers - Eduard Junior, Villiers, Louis and Johannes - together with their father Eduard Senior and Operations Director Johan Boshoff, hold the equity and run the various business units that make up the group. But the farm to the north of Cape Town is still the bedrock of the enterprise, providing 50 percent of the milk used in the dairy processing operations.
